My name is Kelly Upton and I am the founder of The Interior Trading Company.
I’m a teacher in conservation and land management for TAFE and I’ve managed a bush regeneration business for over 20 years. I’ve also worked with women’s groups in Australia over the years mainly through teaching outreach programs in regional and remote areas.
The main reason that I started The Interior Trading Company was to help women.
Whenever I travel I buy hand woven and handmade things for my home. I’ve always appreciated these types of products and I regularly seek out local markets and find the best artisans in search of the next special piece.
In my travels I kept seeing women trapped in the cycle of poverty with no real way out. I also saw that a lot of these women had skills and could produce beautiful items but they had no way of ac
cessing the broader market or of getting a decent return on their work – so the cycle of poverty continued.
That’s when I thought ‘there has to be a better way’. The women have the skills and access to local resources to make things, they just need support in developing suitable products for specific markets.
And that’s where I come in….
I established The Interior Trading Company to work with women artisans to develop beautiful home wares for the Australian market and to go out there and tell people all about them.
So that’s what I’m here to do. Please browse our website, enjoy learning more about us, our stories and our products.
